Peoria
is one of the largest cities in Illinois, located in the north-central portion of the state. Peoria is considered a representation of the average American city because of its demographics and mainstream Midwestern culture. Therefore, Peoria is often used as a test market for new products, services and public policy polling. Peoria is also one of the oldest cities in the Midwest (much older than Chicago.) French explorers came up the Illinois River from the Mississippi in 1680 and built Fort Crevecoeur in the region that is now Peoria. This fort later burned to the ground and in 1813, Fort Clark was built. In 1825, Fort Clark officially became Peoria. Today, Peoria is home to 9,000 acres of parks, five public golf courses and the Glen Oak Zoo. The Peoria Park District was the 2001 Winner of the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Parks and Recreation for Class II Parks. Several fine museums are located in Peoria, including The Lakeview Museum for the Arts and Sciences and the Wheels o Time Museum. The Steamboat Classic, which is the world's largest four-mile (6-km) race, is held every summer in Peoria and draws runners from around the world. The Contemporary Art Center of Peoria, and the Peoria Art Guild and Galleries are host of an Annual Art Fair that is rated as one of the best professional art fairs in the nation. Other attractions in Peoria include the Opera Illinois, the Peoria Symphony Orchestra, the Peoria Ballet and several community and professional theaters.

Central Illinois has a humid, continental climate with four clearly defined seasons. Winter is cold and snowy, although not as cold as the northwest corner of the state. Frigid air masses that move down from Canada can bring bitterly cold temperatures to the region. Heavy snowfall is common in winter and occasionally blizzards can occur. January is usually the coldest month. Summer, by contrast, is hot and humid, with July being the hottest month of the year. Violent thunderstorms are possible March through June, sometimes producing hail and strong winds. The state of Illinois is also vulnerable to tornadoes. Autumn is generally the calmest time of the year in the state, with sunny warm days and cool nights. Spring comes slowly to central Illinois and weather is variable with a mix of cool temperatures, rain and sunshine.
