Nauvoo
is a small town situated on a wide bend in the Mississippi River in a remote corner of west-central Illinois. With a population of only 1,063, Nauvoo nonetheless attracts a large number of visitors each year for its historical and religious significance. The town was founded by Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of the Latter-day Saints. He named the town Nauvoo "to be beautiful," from the traditional Sephardi Hebrew language. Nauvoos historic district contains nearly 50 restored sties from the 1800s. You can enjoy a horse drawn carriage ride through the historic district and visit the Nauvoo Visitors Center, which features displays, artifacts, and a garden with a Monument to Women. In Nauvoo, you can also experience all the workings of a vineyard at Baxters Village, Illinois oldest winery. Recreation in the area includes golf at the Great River Road Golf Club. Carved out of the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River, the golf club is situated along the Great River Roads scenic byway south of Nauvoo. It has been named "truly one of the best golf bargains anywhere," by Midwest Golf Magazine. Also near the town is Nauvoo State Park, situated on the banks of the Mississippi. This 148-acre park features a 13-acre lake for fishing, boating, hiking, picnicking and camping. Nauvoo State Park is also the site of an annual grape festival. Nauvoo not only has a unique name and history, but also has an amazing number of attractions and activities for a town of its size and population.

The west central region of Illinois has a continental, four-season climate. January is generally the coldest month of the year. Snowfall varies from year to year, but it is not uncommon to experience heavy snow and even blizzards in central Illinois. Spring comes slowly to the Midwest, starting out with cool weather and lots of rain and thunderstorms. Gradually, the first hint of warmer weather comes in late spring. Summers, by contrast, are warm to hot, with variable humidity. You can expect violent thunderstorms almost anytime in central Illinois, but they occur most frequently between March - July. Central Illinois also lies within the Midwest tornado belt. Fall is beautiful in this region with mild sunny days and cool evenings. The average precipitation in this region is 36-40 inches per year.
